STUDENT OF THE MONTH – SEPTEMBER 2018

MICHAEL DAVID CHEN | SINGING GRADE 3 & PIANO GRADE 6

Michael Chen joined the Music Chamber at the tender age of five. Seven years later, he is preparing for his Grade six in piano and Grade three in Voice after achieving an impressive Distinction score of 135 marks in this summer’s ABRSM exams.

Michael has remained loyal to his first teacher Ms Elizabeth Ancheta throughout his musical journey, first on piano, before taking singing lessons with her three years later.

“Ms Elizabeth is always patient with me and I feel she loves spending time with me,” he says, adding that they play a game of spicing up their program with some of his favorite songs if he also worked seriously on the exams and method pieces.

“I love the freedom to choose which songs I can play. Ms. Elizabeth let me choose songs from the ABRSM books and I chose some of my favorite songs to play as well,” he says.

Ms Elizabeth says she is impressed by the fact that Michael has scored Distinction despite his heavy school work load that is allowing him to come to the Music Chamber only once a week.

Michael has proven his musical ability and his diligence and focus, which are admirable qualities for this young musician, she says.

Michael is keen to continue learning music but not to make a career or it. “I would like to take on music for leisure and my own happiness but not as a career. Computer engineering and coding in JavaScript would be my dream job.”

He also loves to play Rugby and Basketball.
